Papers of the Breckinridge, Gamble and Watts families of Virginia and Florida, circa 1794-1850.

The collection consists chiefly of the letters of Mary Scott Watts Gamble, of Virginia and later Welaunee, Florida, to her family in Botetourt County, Va. Her early letters are written to her brother at New London Academy, Campbell County and convey news of family and friends. Letters from Florida discuss life there including purchase of slaves for a cotton plantation and events in the second Seminole War which eventually led to flight to Tallahassee. Territorial governor Richard K. Call is mentioned. General correspondence of the three families concerns news of family and friends include a visit to Edgehill and Thomas Jefferson Randolph, and a very brief reference to the whiskey rebellion of 1794.
